As with many things, there are varying opinions on how to research effective keywords. Looking at things from a reverse planning approach, it is important to think first about the strength of your website’s content.

The content on your website is directly related to the strength of your keywords and those are tied to the ability to research effective keywords. Since many search engines look for content that relates to the subject matter of the website, it is important to research keywords or keyword phrases that are “natural” to the subject your website is promoting.

Understanding how to do the research, as a small business owner, will help to propel your website and helps visitors find your website over the competitor.

The goal is to teach you how to use basic techniques that will help you to research and implement your new keywords into your website.

Step 1It is important to identify your competitors. This can be done by typing your industry into one of the many search engines. To further narrow your search, especially if you are a local business, you can enter your city, state, or zip code. The resulting information will bring up a list of businesses in your area with the same or similar business criteria.

Step 2Right click anywhere on the main page and view the page source file. You will see something like this:
Look for the terms “Meta Description” and “Meta Keywords”. These will show you what types of keywords they are using and perhaps ones that you might want to use as well.

Step 3Use a keyword tool, like Google Keyword Planner, to help develop a group of effective keywords. The goal is to look for relevant keywords that have low to medium competition, but medium to high searches over a 12-month period.

NOTE: Make certain that you are searching terms within your local market, if you are researching for local optimization.

Step 4Once you have your list of relevant, quality keywords, you can start to incorporate them into your website content.
