The main purpose of metadata:

  1. Facilitate the discovery of relevant information
  2. Organize electronic resources
  3. Provide digital Identification
  4. Support Archiving of resources

Metadata assists in resource discovery by "allowing resources to be found by relevant criteria, identifying resources, bringing similar resources together, distinguishing dissimilar resources, and giving location information.

It is important to understand that while some search engines may not currently put high emphasis on Metadata, there are many that still do.

Metadata may consist of the following elements and is inserted with the head tags of your website. However, it is not limited to these.

  1. Meta Title
  2. Meta Description
  3. Meta Keywords
